The annual INVENT competition run by Connect at Catalyst Inc and sponsored by Bank of Ireland UK, is hoping to attract more entrepreneurs and inventors from the Agri-Science sector.

Now in its 11th year, the competition offers applicants the opportunity to glean support, validate their product and gain valuable exposure to a network of business experts and influencers and potentially scoop part of the £33,000 prize fund.

One of last year’s finalist in the Agri-Science category is GasHound. Established in September 2017, GasHound is a portable, slurry gas detection and warning device for use where there is a potential for exposure to Hydrogen sulphide gas which at high concentrations is both colourless and odourless in high concentration. The product is placed in the area where the user is working, so if they leave the area they will be alerted by a text and an alert on an APP when GasHound detects gas, warning the user to stay out of the working area.  This gas is produced when agricultural slurry is mixed prior to spreading on Farmland.

Company owner, Mark Elliott said, “GasHound is different from other products on the market because it is portable and alerts the user via their phone. It can be set anywhere the user is going to work and warns people to stay away from the danger area via warning alarm, texting to up to three phones and using a flashing light to alert users, GasHound also has an app for users that alerts when gas is detected and has to be tapped to confirm the user is not in danger.”

Richard Primrose, Agri-Business Manager, Northern Ireland at Bank of Ireland UK said “Bank of Ireland UK is proud to partner with Connect at Catalyst Inc on the INVENT competition. We want to help identify, support and nourish the agri entrepreneurs and innovators enabling them to flourish. Whether it’s solving a current problem locally in the industry or looking globally at the challenges agriculture faces feeding a growing population while improving the environmental sustainability of our practices. It is the start-ups and new ideas in agriculture supported by an innovative-rich enterprise ecosystem which will have the greatest positive impact for our future.

INVENT is open to anyone who is a resident of Northern Ireland and offers an opportunity for enthusiastic and passionate innovators and entrepreneurs to be part of a unique competition.

The highlight of the INVENT competition will be the annual awards ceremony held on 10 October 2019, where around 700 business leaders, innovators and investors will gather to discover who will be crowned the overall winner. Closing date for entries is 15 March 2019.
