Artificial Intelligence: priceless or perilous?

Added Tuesday, May 30 2017

At Catalyst Inc we believe that in order for Northern Ireland’s innovators to change the world, we all need to share what we know about how the world is changing.

This is the driver behind a series of ten headline debates which was launched in Derry/Londonderry on 25th May, entitled ‘The 4th Industrial Revolution Challenge’, by Connect at Catalyst Inc.

The first debate of the series looked at how the addition of artificial intelligence, or cognitive analytics, into the products and services we buy, over the next few years, is predicted to fundamentally alter the way we live, work and relate to one another.

Looking through the lens of a ‘sandwich shop’, the interactive evening assessed the impact that artificial intelligence could have on its service, promotion, competition, supply chain and operation over the coming years, in effect rebuilding a sandwich shop with artificial intelligence.

Emer Maguire, former winner of Famelab UK, moderated the event and attendees heard from leading entrepreneurs Mark Nagurski, MakeMatic & Ciaran Murray, Creative Metrics, Ben Greene from Analytics Engine, Grainne Watson from Fujitsu and Damien Coyle from Ulster University.

Speaking at the event, Steve Orr, Director of Connect said  “The impact of the 4th Industrial Revolution could make Brexit seem like a picnic. As Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum says,

‘only those regions that begin the discussion now between government, business and academia on the coming impact will stand the best chance of being a disrupter instead if disrupted.’“

Mr Orr continued “This series of debates aims to start that discussion, exploring how existing industry and public services will be disrupted by the acceleration of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, precision medicine, 3D printing”

At the end of the debate, attendees were asked to vote on the question ‘Artificial Intelligence: Priceless or Perilous? 87% voted ‘Priceless’.

The next debate will be titled: "Precision Medicine: A visit to the doctor in 2025” and will take place in Belfast in September.
